SNAP, Double Up Food Bucks & Appalachian Farmacy

We are delighted to offer several incentive programs and ways to serve low-income customers!

Huge thanks to our partners at Appalachian Resource Conservation & Development Council (ARCD) who obtained a grant through the State of Tennessee to offer the great Appalachian Farmacy programs!

Programs offered:

  • SNAP-EBT stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Electronic Benefits Transfer, the program formerly known as food stamps. It is a USDA nutritional assistance initiative administered at the state level. SNAP can be viewed as a bridge to help Tennesseans reach their full potential as self-sufficient contributing members of our community and economy. These funds can be used to purchase food-producing plants and food products (produce, meat, bread, cheese, etc.) except for hot ready-to-eat foods.

  • Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) is a SNAP-match program offered at farmers markets and grocers, up to $20 matched per day. If you redeem $10 in SNAP-EBT funds, you’ll get $10 in DUFB. If you redeem $30 in SNAP-EBT funds, you’ll get $20 in DUFB. This currency is eligible for produce, mushrooms, herbs, and food-producing plants and seeds. Prior to 2023, the benefit was provided in partnership with Nourish Knoxville with a brown token. Starting in 2023, the program is provided in partnership with ARCD with a black token. Both tokens are still accepted!

  • Build It Up Bucks (BIU) provides farmers market incentives to participants in school garden projects and Bucky’s Food Pantry and Little Buc’s at East Tennessee State University. Program recipients are given $5 paper vouchers to be redeemed. These funds can be used on fresh produce, mushrooms, and herbs.

  • Farmacy Fit is a farmers market walking program connecting physical fitness with fresh, locally grown produce. At Jonesborough Farmers Market, this program is run in conjunction with our in-house walking program, Farm Fresh Fit. These tokens can be used on fresh produce, mushrooms, and herbs.

How they work at the markets:

Jonesborough Farmers Market

Boone Street Market

SNAP-EBT

Visit the information booth. Because we have unreliable internet connection outside, staff will process an offline voucher and give you red tokens to spend with vendors. A few vendors are able to process EBT funds themselves, as well. SNAP funds redeemed at JFM must be spent at JFM as the funds are immediately reimbursed to the market.

Upon checkout, staff will use our EBT card reader to process the transaction for eligible items. You’ll be prompted to enter your card’s PIN to complete the transaction.

DUFB

**Can be redeemed at all participating markets

When you redeem your EBT funds at the information booth, staff will offer you black DUFB tokens in the appropriate amount up to $20 per day. The tokens can be spent with vendors on eligible items. Brown DUFB tokens can still be redeemed!

When you check out using your EBT card, staff will offer you black DUFB tokens in the appropriate amount up to $20 per day to be used on a future purchase. If you are redeeming DUFB tokens, staff will use those first on eligible items, then ask you to use your EBT card or other payment method on the rest of the purchases.

BIU Bucks

**Can be redeemed at all participating markets

If you have paper vouchers to redeem, visit the information booth to receive your tokens. If you have tokens to redeem, you can go directly to the vendor to spend.

Paper vouchers and tokens can be used upon checkout. You will not be able to redeem paper vouchers for tokens.

Farmacy Fit

**Can be redeemed at all participating markets

Visit the information booth to sign up for the walk and learn our path. You’ll be looking for a magnet at the halfway point. After you walk, come back to the information booth, tell us what you saw on the magnet, and collect your $5 in tokens. While the Appalachian Farmacy Fit tokens can be used at all participating markets, the JFM Farm Fresh Fit Walking Program tokens must be used at JFM.

Tokens can only be redeemed at BSM. Staff will use tokens first on eligible items, then ask you to pay the remaining amount using another method.
